Mathura is a sacred city in Uttar Pradesh, northern India. The deity Lord Krishna is said to have been born on the site of Sri Krishna Janma Bhoomi, a Hindu temple.

Dotting the Yamuna River are 25 ghats (flights of steps down to the water), of which Vishram Ghat is considered the holiest. Sati Burj is a 16th-century memorial tower.

Dwarkadhish Temple has a carved entrance and a black-marble idol of Lord Krishna.

Mathura the centre of Braj has the extreme importance in the religious history of India as it’s not merely a city but the birth place of Supreme god Lord Krishna .Its located about 145 kms southeast of Delhi on National Highway-2 and approx. 45 Kms to the north of Agra.

Mathura has its existence history since the period of Treta Yuga, when Ikshvaku prince Shatrughna (younger brother of Lord Rama) killed the demon Lavanasura the son of Madhu and acquired the land.

The place was then called as Madhuvan as it was having dense forests, later on as Madhupur and finally as Mathura of today. In Dwapar Yuga Lord Krishna as the eighth incarnation of Vishnu appeared in this holy land of Mathura to relieve the region from the atrocious rule of his maternal uncle Kansa and establish the reign of dharma.

During 1st century BCE Mathura was the great centre of art and culture under the rule of Kushan dynasty, as one of their capital.

The Greek explorer and author Megasthenes in 3rd century BCE described Mathura as the magnificent city under the name ?????a (Méthora). During the reign of Maurya and Ashoka the city was completely under the influence of Buddhist culture which could be evident from the remains of that time kept in the city museum.

Between 11th and 15th century the city was sacked and many of its temples were destroyed by the Muslim rulers Mahmud of Ghazni and Sikandar Lodhi. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb also ordered the destruction of Hindu temples in city and built the city’s Jami Masjid nearby to the actual birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Mathura is known for its cultural and religious heritage and the same is evident from the sites and temples of the city.

As per the Garuda Purana, Mathura is one of seven holy places in India:
